The final weekend of the WCRA Handicap Series saw plenty of action in all three categories. A
field of nearly 40 riders lined up for the Women’s 35 lap handicap event
which was won gamely by 12 year-old Helen Clayton (Lichfield City CC).
Clayton was the only member of the 5 strong limit group who managed to
hold onto the fast moving bunch as they tried to recoup the 2 lap deficit.
Despite some aggressive riding by the likes of Laura Bissell (Team Welwyn),
Rachell Hobson (JE James RT) and Julie O’Hagan (CC Luton) they could not
shake off the youngster. Misfortune struck series leader Kelly Grant (Team
Milton Keynes) plus contenders Chrissie Viljoen (Hemel Hempstead CC) and
Helen Gregory (Peloton) all who unfortunately retired due to mishaps. Overall
the series was won by another youngster 13 year-old Jessica Stoddart (Interbike
RT) after finishing second in the bunch sprint to Brynn Kvinlaug
(Cambridge CC) but ahead of main rivals Roz Clitheroe (Team Letchworth),
Bissell and O’Hagan. |

The
Men’s event had 56 entries and again saw much aggressive riding. After
many promising moves had been brought to heel a trio of Peter Bissell
(Team Welwyn), Campbell Noon (Team Milton Keynes) and Phil Marshall (Fareham
Wheelers) managed to escape in the closing stages. In the hectic pursuit
over the final laps Marshall paid dearly for his efforts but the others
held on, with Bissell a clear winner in the sprint. Finishing
in 6th place Brian Fleming (Tri & Run) secured the overall
series for the men – a clear winner with nearly twice as many points as
his closest rival Sean Dines (Alpha RC) |
