Eileen GrayA Brief Profile of her Achievements
1947 Served on London Centre National Cycling Union Committee at Herne Hill, where she lobbied and gained the first chance for girls to compete for their own National Titles on the Track. 1949 Women's Track Racing Association was formed. 1950 WTRA organised it's own Track and Grass Track Meeting . WTRA organised a 12mile open event at Matching Green closed circuit for the Claude Butler Cup. 1955 WTRA organised first World Track Record at Herne Hill. Daisy Franks established 500m Flying Start. First team to go to France to compete in a stage race gaining 1st,2nd,7th & 9th places. 1956 Changed name to Women's Cycle Racing Association. Organised first National Road Race Championship won by Millie Robinson. The first International Road Race was run in Britain at the Harrogate Festival. Team sent to France to compete in Stage Race. 1958 First World Championship for Women in Paris, France. As the BCF did not intend to send a full team, Eileen organised a FUND RAISING to send two extra girls, making it a team of 6 riders. 1963 Eileen became the President of the WCRA and served until 1976. 1973 Eileen became the President of the British Cycling Federation and served until 1986. 1978 Eileen received the OBE for her work on behalf of the sport of cycle racing. 1984 The Olympics for women cyclists were gained due to Eileen's hard work. 1988 Eileen was the first women to become 'Vice Chair' on the British Olympic Committee. 1991 Mayor of Kingston, Surrey. 1997 Eileen received the CBE Eileen Gray is, and has been for 7 years now, the Chairman of London Heathrow Youth Games. She is also currently Vice President of her local arts. The Queen will be attending the Games which will be on July 13th/14th. Cycling events will take place at Crystal Palace, Bromley Park. The primary school children's games will be earlier, July 4th, as there were so many entrants. |
